Leslie,

You can make cloth diapers very cheaply if you shop resale stores. T-shirts make great diaper outers - especially if you center the shirt's printing on the diaper bum! They'd work for inners too but won't be as soft as a microfleece or velour. Cotton terry can be used for the absorbent layers; look for old towels or robes to cut up. Washcloths can be used as-is for wipes, or cut them in half and zig-zag the cut edge so it won't ravel. Wool sweaters - 100% wool - can be made into wool covers, soakers and pants. My local JoAnns has recently started carrying PUL too. It's not cheap, but if you buy everything else second-hand it won't be too expensive overall.

I've got a whole page of links for patterns and directions for making cloth diapers on my cloth diapering site. I hope you can get your hands on a machine soon so you can start sewing! (Maybe check your local craigslist??)

Good luck and happy sewing!

Hi there Amy, i've so very much enjoyed reading your blog and stories about your family and life going green. I'm a SAHM of two little girls and our first boy is due in April..and as of this week i have discovered cloth diapering in a way i had NO earthly idea was available, i've never even met anyone who has been an advocate! I'm actually pretty overwhelmed with the newness of it all. I am excited though! I plan to homeschool my oldest next year and I want to get a good start on being a WAHM before that season begins. Any tips for a VERY tight budget would be great! and as of last summer i've picked up sewing, my mom started to teach me, but i dont have a sewing machine and i live 11 hrs from my mom. so, inconveniently i have no way to start a hobby of sewing until i have the room to do so and the money to buy a s/m. :) i've registered for some cloth diapers at Target and i dont know who will buy them! but we'll see!!

Thanks Vivianne! I am in the US and sometimes it's really hard to be green. But we do the best we can because every little bit helps.

I think you are doing a pretty good job there. I haven't read you intor page, but I'm guessing you're in the US? It'a whole lot easier being green in New Zealand. Love your blog, I've added you to my favourites :-)
